New IUD Insertion Guidelines Include Pain Relief Recommendations
Ketorolac Recommended for Pain Management
The latest guidelines for intrauterine device (IUD) insertion now include recommendations for pain relief. Ketorolac, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), is now recommended to be given orally 40 or 60 minutes prior to IUD insertion. This recommendation is based on a study that showed that ketorolac significantly reduced pain during IUD insertion compared to placebo.
Other Notable Updates
In addition to the new pain relief recommendations, the latest guidelines also include updates on:
- Provision of medications for intrauterine device insertion
- Selected practice recommendations for contraceptive use
- US Medical Eligibility Criteria for Contraceptive Use
These guidelines are essential reading for healthcare providers who insert IUDs. They provide the most up-to-date information on the best practices for IUD insertion and pain management.
