A 2004 Chevrolet Silverado operated by Fischer was traveling northbound in the left lane when it struck a disabled 2006 Ford Mustang that was parked in the right lane due to mechanical issues. The Mustang was occupied by D'Onofrio.

The impact of the crash caused both vehicles to spin out. The Chevrolet Silverado came to a stop on the right shoulder, while the Ford Mustang overturned and came to a rest in the left lane. Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.
