Brood Cicadas to Emerge in Georgia, Illinois in 2024

Brood XIX, XIII Cicadas to Make Appearance

Emergence Expected in Over a Dozen States

Trillions of periodical cicadas are expected to emerge from the ground in multiple states this spring as part of a rare double brood emergence. The 13-year cicadas, known as Brood XIX, will emerge in Georgia and the Southeast, while the 17-year cicadas, known as Brood XIII, will appear in Illinois. This will be the first time in over a decade that two different broods of cicadas have emerged in the same year.

Cicadas are large, flying insects that are known for their loud, buzzing sound. They spend most of their lives underground, emerging only to mate and lay eggs. The emergence of periodical cicadas, which can number in the billions, is a major event in the natural world.

The emergence of Brood XIX and Brood XIII cicadas is expected to begin in late April or early May. The cicadas will be most active during the day, and their loud buzzing sound can be heard from a distance. They will typically live for about six weeks, during which time they will mate and lay eggs.

The emergence of cicadas can have a significant impact on the environment. The insects can damage trees and other plants, and they can also be a nuisance to humans. However, cicadas are also an important food source for birds and other animals, and they help to aerate the soil.
