Early Life and Career

Catherine Astrid Salome Freeman OAM (born 16 February 1973), known as Cathy Freeman, is an Aboriginal Australian former sprinter who specialized in the 400 meters event. Born in Queensland, Australia, Freeman first gained recognition for her athletic abilities at a young age, winning her first race at eight years old.

Olympic Triumph

Freeman's most notable achievements came during the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She was honored with the task of lighting the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony. Later, she captured the gold medal in the women's 400-meter dash, becoming the first Indigenous Australian to win an individual Olympic gold medal.
